Music for all tastes this festive season

Jazz, swing, rock, chamber music – this season has it all. As bands, musical ensembles and orchestras prepare for their end-of-the-year shows, the local music scene is bursting with performances right now. Some are annual traditions, others are a spur-of-the-moment kind of thing but still, there is something for every kind of music lover this December.

Coming up shortly on Friday 9, singer Alice Ayvazian with guitarist Alexis Kasinos return to Vinylio Wine Etc in Limassol for another evening of jazz. This performance though, titled Holly Jolly Jazzy Friday Night, will include jazzy Christmas classics, as well as other hits from the 20s, 30s and 40s for a nostalgic, cosy night.

Nicosia too will have its share of live music this weekend starting with a performance by Trio Frisson at Sarah’s Jazz Club. On Saturday 10 the venue welcomes back one of the leading soul bands in Cyprus performing their unique blend of grooves. With funky 6-string basslines locked into ‘boom-bap’ drum beats; and a transition from Rhodes keyboard onto the grand piano for this venue, the band are excited to be returning to the jazz club, this time with Alex Papadopoulos on drums.

Trio Frisson present a vivid mixture of original songs and reworked cover versions of favourite classics. Their impressive setlist betrays a wide range of influences, but mostly incorporates flavours of soul and funk, with occasional hints of reggae  and hip-hop.

On the following weekend, the Larnaca Cultural Foundation for Children and Youth in collaboration with the wind and percussion orchestra of Sistema Cyprus, organise a unique music-poetry concert. The Win(d)er Tales concert will take place on Saturday 17 with the music composer Vassilis Filippou and the writer/poet Maria Kouvarou sharing the stage of the Municipal Larnaca Theatre with the orchestra. A creative dialogue and melodic tunes will fill the theatre, under the artistic supervision of Santiago Ossa Alzate.

Plenty more music evenings make up December’s agenda with many more last-minute events expected to pop up. Live music is definitely back!
