The greens party issued a statement on Wednesday in protest at the death of a deer at the Limassol Zoo last week.

In a written statement, Edmond Hawila, Limassol district secretary of the greens, said the party will hold an event on Sunday, December 18, outside the zoo to protest the animal’s tragic death.

The party requested an immediate investigation into the circumstances under which the deer died but are not satisfied by the authorities’ explanations, the statement said.

“Where were the caretakers at the zoo [who did not] notice that the fawn was in danger?” they ask.

The statement continued to demand closure of all zoos which it characterised as merely “places of torture and slow death for defenceless animals.”

“We invite environmentalists as well as every sensitised citizen to participate in the peaceful protest, at 2pm outside the Limassol Zoo,” the statement concludes.
