Police on Sunday arrested a 24-year-old resident of Limassol, after he was found possession of over 1kg of cannabis.

According to a police statement, around noon on Sunday, while motorcycle police patrolled on Paphos Street a large displacement motorcycle cam towards them. As soon as the driver noticed the members of the police, he sped up and rode through a red traffic light, in an attempt to get away.

Police followed the motorcycle, whose rider, in his continued attempt to escape, drove over the dividing island and entered the opposite traffic lane. Wending through cars, the driver lost control causing his motorbike to overturn on the shoulder

Immediately after the fall, police witnessed the driver picking up a package from the ground and fleeing on foot. Police followed him and managed to halt him by firing warning shots.

The man resisted arrest pushing and kicking the police, while he tried to tear the package he was holding.

Police immobilised him and determined he was a 24-year-old resident of Limassol, while the package was found to contain cannabis, weighing 1.38 kg. On his person police also found cannabis, weighing 12 g, a quantity of cocaine weighing two grams, a crusher with a small quantity of cannabis, weighing half a gram, a precision scale, two mobile phones and the sum of €200.

An arrest warrant was issued against the 24-year-old, and he was detained to facilitate ongoing investigations.
