The resolution of the Cyprus issue is the highest priority and the EU has an important role to play in this, Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos said.
President Nikos Christodoulides’ focus on active and catalytic involvement in this matter by the EU pointed to this, the minister said addressing an Italian Embassy event celebrating Italy’s national day on Thursday evening.
In his speech, the minister thanked Italy for its continuous support for a fair, comprehensive and sustainable solution, based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, in line with the UN Security Council resolutions.
Cyprus and Italy are connected through their history and culture, Kombos said, their geographical proximity and common values.
He noted the two countries have expanded and intensified their dialogue and cooperation in a wide range of sectors such as energy, trade, defence and security, tourism, culture and education.
Apart from this, cooperation between the countries’ business communities was at the forefront of the relationship, Kombos said.
“We must continue to join forces to effectively address regional and global issues, such as migration, climate change, energy diversification and the green transition,” the minister stated.
