Celebrating the world of dance once again is the Cyprus Contemporary Dance Festival. Organised by the deputy ministry of culture, in collaboration with the Rialto Theatre, the festival will take place for the 24th time this June at Rialto Theatre and Nicosia Municipal Theatre.

Silence and words, sounds and music will be featured in a choreographic panorama, held from June 7 to 29. Since its establishment in 1998, the festival has been bringing pioneering international dance companies to the local stage.

This year, the festival’s programme includes performances of a high artistic level staged by dance companies from Cyprus and abroad. Dance groups from Cyprus, Israel, Belgium, Switzerland and Germany will participate in this 24th edition.

Opening the festival on June 7 will be the Hocus Pocus performance, choreographed by Philippe Saire. Hocus Pocus is mainly based on the power of images, their magic and the sensations they provoke. The very unique set design allows for a playful and magical exploration into a game of appearances and disappearances of both bodies and accessories.

The brotherly relationship that develops between the two dancers constitutes the show’s guiding thread, both through the hardships they create for themselves to toughen themselves up, as well as through the fantastic voyage that subsequently awaits them. Hocus Pocus is one of the few contemporary dance works intended for a young audience. It seeks to challenge the imagination of its audience while weaving a narrative that is open enough for each child to build his or her own story.

The festival and its first performance will open at 5pm and for Nicosia audiences who want to attend but do not want to drive (or do not have a car), free transportation is organised. A bus will leave from the Cyprus Handicraft Centre on Athalassa Avenue at 3.30pm on the day. Similar routes will continue throughout the festival’s duration. For more information about the free transportation, call 99-618225.
