According to the police, the incident happened around 7.15pm on Sunday, when the 82-year-old man contacted the police by phone and reported that he had shot an intruder who had entered the yard of his home and was allegedly attempting to steal electrical cables.

The elderly suspect reported he had fired his shotgun in the air, however, he injured the man, who attempted to flee.

Police went to the scene where they located the injured 67-year-old man, who had been shot in the chest.

He was taken by ambulance to Limassol general hospital and then to a private clinic, where he underwent surgery and was kept for further treatment. Doctors said his condition is critical.

“Examinations will be carried out with the help of the ballistics service of the Limassol CID to clarify all the circumstances under which this incident took place,” Limassol police spokesperson Lefteris Kyriacou told the Cyprus News Agency.

He also added that the 82-year-old was the victim of another attempted electric cable theft last week, but it is unclear whether the perpetrator was the man who got shot on Sunday.
