A second Turkish Cypriot halloumi producer landed a Protected Designation of Origin for its hellim/halloumi, it emerged on Monday.

According to Turkish Cypriot press reports, the producer is called Arden. The Turkish Cypriot chamber of commerce heralded the development saying “access of Turkish Cypriot halloumi/hellim producers to the EU common market, will ensure the industry is profitable and sustainable, increasing the quality of the products.”

The chamber of commerce added the broader goal is to give Turkish Cypriot producers access to the EU market, while efforts are underway with the European Commission to establish exporting halloumi/hellim to the bloc.

Earlier this year, the government welcomed the first PDO certificate being awarded to a Turkish Cypriot producer of halloumi/hellim as proof of the role the EU can play in efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem.
