All necessary disciplinary proceedings will be carried out against an inmate who falsely claimed to have swallowed four blades, the prison department announced on Wednesday.

The prisoner allegedly went up to a guard at around 11pm on Sunday and said he swallowed four blades. He was immediately taken to Nicosia general hospital, but it emerged that the claim had been false.

He was assessed by a psychiatrist the following day as the procedures specify and has since returned to the prison with no medical issues, the prison department stressed.

The prisoner has since apologised for his behaviour which he said was part of an effort to get better conditions during his detention. He has allegedly done the same thing three times in the past between 2021 and 2022.
