Celebrating Disney and local music initiatives

Before the festival’s November agenda concludes, two special performances are approaching. This weekend, a concert featuring West End stars celebrates the 100th anniversary of Disney. Three shows will take place, an 8pm show on Saturday, an 11.30am show and a 6.30pm show on Sunday dedicated to the magic of Disney’s songs and films.

Favourite songs and musical themes from Disney’s most beloved films will be brought to life on the Nicosia Municipal Theatre stage by an orchestra of 56 musicians and major West End singers. The concert is a unique audio-visual experience with a backdrop of films that taught young and old alike to dream, including Alladin, Lion King, Little Mermaid, Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, Mary Poppins, Encanto, and many more.

Then on November 29, the music collective Island Seeds will take the theatre’s stage to present their debut album Beginnings, a musical journey that began with their first single Stray Cat. The eight-piece band was founded in the dead zone of Nicosia, with artists and musicians from the two largest communities of Cyprus.

Stray Cat recounts the adventures of a stray cat in the Nicosia dead zone and includes names, streets and buildings from the group’s birthplace. Primarily Cypriot and at the same time effortlessly extroverted, Stray Cat, as well as the entire album, is a hopeful personal look that melodically combines humour and irony.

With soul music, melodies and psychedelic rhythms as their starting point, as well as lyrics inspired by their life in Cyprus, Island Seeds and their Mediterranean soul sound are a fresh perspective on the island’s music scene that demonstrates the virtues of creative coexistence. The evening will be opened by the artist Nama Dama, with her songs that combine live looping and narration.
