Meletios Meletiou will present his first solo exhibition in Cyprus this December titled Playground. Hosted at Eins Gallery in Limassol, the exhibition is curated by Panos Giannikopoulos and presents compositions that activate the sense of exploration and play.
Running from December 8 to January 15, Playground showcases artwork that blurs the line between danger and enjoyment with aggressive surfaces that contort and reverse their initial impressions. Hostile urban environments are presented with a playful disposition in his work as he explores the notion of a ‘playground’. Through his approach, the artist returns to conceptualisations of childhood, a theme that preoccupies him in a wide range of his work.
Circular paths without corners and hostile elements transformed into colourful works make up a part of this exhibition, shifting views and perspectives. Through this process, Meletiou explores the paradox of childhood, mimicry, reproduction and the potential for resistance to established structures, readjustment, and the joy of disruption.
Living and working in Rome, Meletiou has been part of several international exhibitions throughout his career. Last year, he presented his solo exhibition Buffer Zone at Pastificio Cerere Foundation in Rome while in 2016 he launched the Imaginary Friends project, consisting of workshops for migrants held in Lesbos and Athens. This December, he returns to his hometown of Limassol for his first solo showcase on the island.
