A crescendo of dreams

sistema cyprus

This Sunday afternoon, 160 young musicians from three different orchestras from Nicosia and Larnaca will take the stage of the Nicosia Municipal Theatre to present Sistema Cyprus’ new concert A crescendo of Dreams. The 5pm concert will fill the theatre with world sounds played by young talents, under the direction of the renowned Venezuelan maestro Ruben Cova Villalobos.

“Just like our orchestra,” says Sistema Cyprus, “the concert’s programme is diverse. You will be able to hear compositions from America, Turkey, Cyprus, Russia, England, Portugal, Colombia, Mexico and Venezuela. The composition Alas a Malala by Arturo Marquez holds a special place in this concert since it represents our goals as a community. It is a piece dedicated to Malala Yousfzai who fought for the world she dreamed of, a world of equality and peace. We invite you to join us at the concert and experience this ‘crescendo of dreams’.”

Since 2018, Sistema Cyprus has been offering a music-social programme focused on creating orchestras and offering music education to the children in Cyprus. Its members come from all corners of the world, often with a migrant background, refugees and children and youth with fewer opportunities. The initiative is inspired by the music-social programme El Sistema founded in Venezuela in 1975.

Through the creation of orchestras and choirs, El Sistema acts as a model, reaching children and youth in high-risk areas of the world. El Sistema and other such programmes, like the one in Cyprus, offer free classical music education and focus on the empowerment and personal development of the children.
