A pop-up exhibition and workshop will bring together the fashion of the past and the clothing of today. Local brand Folkmona is hosting an event in Nicosia on December 29 and 30 to celebrate culture and feature their latest clothing collection, which uses the unique handwoven rizari fabric.

Folkmona’s journey began with the revelation that Cyprus’ iconic alatsia fabric wasn’t locally crafted. Responding to this, Folkmona created The RIZARI Fabric, a handwoven gem made in Cyprus, drawing inspiration from alatsia. This unique fabric now takes centre stage in the brand’s latest collection, designed by Valentina Koutsoudis, who weaves inspiration from the traditional rural costume of Cyprus.

The essence of Folkmona’s pop-up event aims at transporting visitors to the past through the Rizari collection and engaging workshops. The Upcycling Workshop at 11am, reflects the brand’s eco-friendly ethos, and invites visitors to repurpose their old garments while incorporating a piece of Rizari fabric into their new creations. The 2pm Weaving Workshop, will provide participants with insights into the delicate art of weaving and emphasis on the importance of sustaining this time-honoured profession in Cyprus.

The entire two-day event at Garage also reflects Folkmona’s core vision; a fashion brand dedicated to preserving Cypriot craftsmanship and reviving the traditions of Cyprus. “As the founder of Folkmona,” says Andreani Panayide, “I am thrilled to invite everyone to this two-day event, a celebration of Cypriot craftsmanship, tradition and the timeless elegance of the Rizari fabric. Become part of the journey of cultural revival, where each garment tells a story of our vibrant past.”
