First week of January welcomes more live music

As the first week of the new year arrives, so do the live music events. A couple of music performances are happening this week to entertain music lovers and extend the holiday season a little longer.

Saturday night in old town Nicosia will be all about flamenco and rumba rhythms as the popular local trio Rumba Attack performs at Sarah’s Jazz Club. The trio returns to the jazz bar after the success of the presentation of their debut album Harmonics to perform more original instrumental material and select covers.

Band members Constantinos Lyras, Memnon Arestis and Savvas Thoma have been performing together as Rumba Attack for almost a decade, entertaining audiences with their distinctive Flamenco-Rumba style which is blended with sounds from Middle Eastern and Greek origins, Rock and Bossanova. In the first weekend of the year, they will bring their signature sounds to the heart of the capital.

Also happening in Nicosia this Saturday is a performance by Cypriot musician Anna Chrysanthou, who will perform at Kafeneio Prozak’s cosy venue. The music will begin at 8.30pm and Anna will be joined by Angelina Constantiou on the cello and Dimitris Panagi on guitar, laouto and vocals. Their performance is titled Dihos Revma, meaning without electricity as the musicians will perform without the help of sound amplifiers and electronics. Anna will present original songs orchestrated for the guitar and the cello, as well as covers of Mikis Theodorakis, Thanos Mikroutsikos, Savvopoulos, Mariza, Mbofiliou and Doris Day.

Aradippou will have its own live music occasion on Sunday night. Chernobyl Bar will host the Rum & Cigars: Jazz Live Music evening in a few days, welcoming Joseph Ohanian for a soulful performance. A laid-back, melodic soiree is planned for the first Sunday of the year as smooth soul tunes are performed live. As January continues, a dozen more live music nights approach filling bars, theatres and halls with avid music lovers!
