The road transport department is in the final stages of preparing regulations to start MOT safety checks motorcycles, road transport officer Evangelos Panteli said on Thursday.

Speaking to CyBC in the morning, Panteli said that the department is finalising the details to implement mandatory MOT inspections for all motorcycles.

Once the regulations are ready, drivers will be informed, and they will be required to undergo an MOT inspection.

A report in Philenews from October stated that the process was nearly completed, and calls to some motorcyclists were scheduled to begin on November 1.

The MOT for motorcycles will cost €25, with an additional €10 for repeat tests.

The decision to subject two-wheeled motorcycles to a technical inspection was taken after revelations that some larger-grade engines are subject to modifications, allowing them to exceed speed limits, and some braking systems are not up to speed.

According to the report, it was also established that motorcycle and moped drivers are among the most vulnerable road users, leading to measures aimed at preventing fatal accidents caused by poor mechanical conditions.

The technical test will check emissions, brakes, suspension, steering, lights, and tyres among other components.
