North’s biggest mosque sued before opening

Cyprus’ new biggest mosque is to be the subject of a court case, it emerged on Wednesday. It is due to be opened officially on Thursday.

The mosque, named as the Dr Suat Gunsel mosque, is located on the northern outskirts of Nicosia, on the campus of the Near East University.

However, landowner Ahmet Sanver is to sue the Gunsel family, owners of the Near East University and the mosque, saying that part of the mosque complex has been built on his land.

Specifically, he claims the mosque’s car park has been built on land belonging to him, and he said on Wednesday that he and his family did not give permission for anything to be constructed on the land they own.

“I will not give up on my rights,” he said.

“It is clear that the prayers which will be made in this mosque are haram and not permissible, they are sins.”

“Our land has been occupied. We are referring the Gunsels first to God, and then to the courts,” he said.
