Police on Monday are treating a stabbing incident in Limassol overnight as attempted murder, after a 29-year-old man was seriously wounded with a knife.
According to the police, the incident happened around 9pm on Sunday evening in Polemidia. The 29-year-old was taken to Limassol general hospital after he was stabbed by another man, aged 23, in their yard.
Police found the 29-year-old at the scene with a stab wound to his stomach, which the 23-year-old admitted to having inflicted, allegedly in self defence.
The attacker told police he had been sitting in the yard of the house when he was punched in the face and attacked by four others, including the 29-year-old, whom he later stabbed.
Earlier reports had stated that two men involved in the altercation were roommates and that the injured man was taken to the Polemidia police station by acquaintances who reported the fight and pointed out the perpetrator.
The 29-year-old victim underwent surgery for abdominal injuries and is intubated in serious condition at Limassol general hospital.
A judicial arrest warrant was issued against the 23-year-old, under which he was arrested and remanded for eight days.
