There will be no relief from the high temperatures in Cyprus of over 40C through early September, according to the Climate Watch body of the German Meteorological Service (DWD).

According to the DWD on Tuesday, heatwaves and extreme temperatures will continue for the rest of August and into the first week of September throughout the eastern Mediterranean region.

Cyprus, as well as Greece, in particular Crete and Rhodes, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Spain, France, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Albania and North Macedonia will be most affected by the ongoing heatwave.

Temperatures over 40C are expected to be recorded between 11am and 5pm during this period, with forecasts from climate models registering deviations between 1C to 4C higher than the norm.

The intense heat episodes are predicted with a probability of over 90 per cent accuracy from August 9-16, while from August 17 to September 6, the accuracy drops to a probability of 60 to 90 per cent.

Three weather bulletins are issued every 24 hours with updated forecasts and warnings which the public are urged to heed.

The region’s weather conditions and the increased thermal burden in combination with a prolonged dry season, mean the risk of forest fires is extremely high, the meteorology department has said.

DWD’s Climate Watch acts on behalf of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
