Cyprus’ Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos may meet with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan in Brussels at the end of the month, diplomatic sources have said.
Though news emerged on Wednesday that Nicosia had greenlighted the meeting, there had been no confirmation by Thursday on whether Fidan had agreed to it and if it would go ahead.
Kombos is expected to head to Brussels for an informal meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels on August 29 under the wing of the European Council.
Diplomatic sources said Fidan was invited after Cyprus gave the green light.
Should Fidan accept, the two foreign ministers could have the opportunity to engage in talks, according to the sources.
No news had emerged on Thursday over Fidan’s response.
The informal Foreign and Defence Council, the so-called Gymnich was slated to take place in Budapest, due to Hungary’s EU Council presidency.
Nonetheless, as a result of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s pro-Russian stance, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell announced Gymnich would take place in Brussels rather than Budapest.
“We have to send a signal, even if symbolic, that opposing and disqualifying EU foreign policy as a party to the war must have some consequences,” Borrell said last month when the decision was taken.
