The Faneromeni24 Arts Festival continues its summer programme with a series of outdoor cinema nights in August. Come September, cultural performances of music, dance and theatre will fill the courtyard of the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation. First to take the floor is the devised theatre performance P.S. Cyprus, coming on September 5.
Presented by the Valitsa Intra Portas theatre ensemble, the performance takes inspiration from the writings and testimonies of foreign travellers to present the story of Cyprus. Four actors simulating a folk gaggle will throw a party on stage, bringing back memories of the past.
“Four actors in the logic of a folk bouloukio set up a feast evoking memories of the past,” say organisers. “We have learned to live with the idealisation of yesterday. But how do the ‘others’, the ‘foreigners’ see our place? What is the image through their eyes? Through letters, records, photographic material and other testimonies of foreign visitors, a dramaturgy is created that maps the image of Cyprus from the 14th to the 19th century.”
Drawing from the Ottoman to the Anglo-Cypriot period, the performance highlights the passage of these centuries, the notes and flavours of Europe that eventually arrived to replace those of the East. Get ready to witness “a mosaic through time that has nevertheless left a mosaic of cultures engraved on our identity.”
