A Turkish Cypriot woman was arrested at Paphos airport after being found with almost 40kg of tobacco products she had brought from the north, the customs department said on Monday.
The woman was due to fly to the United Kingdom, but a search of her luggage upturned a total of 166 boxes of 200 cigarettes each – 33,200 cigarettes in total – as well as 37.5kg of rolling tobacco.
The customs department said none of the products bore the bilingual Greek and Turkish safety warning, which is typical of tobacco products sold in the Republic of Cyprus, and that they also did not bear any of the other safety features or markings which are found on tobacco products in the Republic.
As a result, the woman was arrested and fined €9,300, before being released.
