A group of migrants who attempted to travel from Cyprus to Italy early on Tuesday morning were intercepted by authorities off the coast of Akrotiri.

At around 3.30am, a coast guard patrol vessel stopped the boat seven nautical miles off Zakaki. Twelve men, three women and five children were on board.

The passengers were safely transported to Limassol port.

Initial investigations indicate the boat had set off from the Moni area, aiming to reach Italy.

Later in the day, Limassol police arrested two men, aged 33 and 34, in connection with the incident.

According to investigators, evidence suggests the two men acted as smugglers facilitating the attempted journey.

People on the boat told police they had paid for the boat trip.

The two men are expected to appear before the Limassol district court on Wednesday to be remanded.

The passengers will be transferred to a reception centre for migrants.
