Roads around Nicosia are to close for parades to celebrate Cyprus’ independence day.
Iosif X Iosif avenue in Strovolos will be closed from the intersection with Spyros Kyprianou avenue to the intersection with Athalasaa avenue between 7am and 1.30pm, while Spyros Kyprianou avenue itself will be closed from its intersection with Iosif X Iosif avenue to the Tseri roundabout between 9am and 1am.
Demetris Vikelas street will be closed from the intersection with Spyros Kyprianou avenue to the GSP Stadium between 5.30am and 1pm, while Pericleous street will be closed from the intersection with Spyros Kyprianou avenue to the intersection with Yiannitson street between 9am and 1pm.
Athalassa avenus will also be closed from the intersection with Iosif X Iosif avenue to the intersection with Limassol avenue between 9am and 1.30pm to allow the military vehicles which will take part in the parade to access the road on which the parade will take place.
While the road closures are in force, drivers wishing to drive into or out of Nicosia are requested to head towards the motorway via the Kalispera lights and via the ring road from the Tseri roundabout.
Cyprus became an independent country on August 16, 1960, but independence day commemorations were moved to October 1 in the early 1960s to avoid the hot summer holiday season.
October 1 became a national holiday in Cyprus in 1979.
