A campaign was launched on Thursday to have the traditional Cypriot koupa added to the European Union’s Protected Geographical Indications (PGI) register.
The Larnaca chamber of commerce (Evel) and the town’s tourism board have now launched a joint study with the aim of having the koupa – a tube of bulgur wheat which is filled with minced meat – added to the register.
The study will be based on research carried out by Larnaca deputy mayor Alexis Michaelides and will aim to identify the “special characteristics” of the food.
Once the study is complete, procedures will be initiated to submit a formal application to the EU, while campaigns will also be run to promote it.
Were they to be accepted onto the PGI register, koupes would join a growing list of Cypriot products, including the Hallitzia Tillirias cheese and Agros rosewater, both of which have been added to the register in the last 12 months.
