Deok union expressed its fury on Tuesday over the spate of racist attacks against delivery drivers primarily in Limassol.
These attacks “trample on human and labour rights”.
The union specified many delivery drivers are attacked but do not report it because there were “recent cases where the matter was not investigated the way it should have.”
Deok said there are now growing fears the problem will take on bigger dimensions “with tragic consequences”. It called on the government, employers and society at large to remain alert.
“This situation not only creates fear and insecurities to employees but puts human lives at risk.”
The union called for more discussions to find solutions, “as these are no longer isolated cases”.
Experts have voiced their concern that the issue may not abate, saying the racist attacks are the result of a years-long racist rhetoric from the government, coupled with growing societal problems.
