The town planning department on Tuesday signed a contract for the demolition of two apartment buildings in the government housing settlement of Platy in Aglandja, Nicosia, as part of the government’s Ktizo plan, which aims atimproving living conditions in refugee estates.
According to a statement released by the interior ministry, the agreed cost for the demolition works is €34,926 plus VAT, and the work is expected to be completed within four months.
The goal of the Ktizo plan is to provide financial support to eligible residents of 358 apartment buildings in government housing settlements for displaced persons, enabling them to repair, strengthen, or rebuild their apartments if necessary.
The scheme will run for ten years with an estimated total cost of €130 million.
The statement added that the upcoming demolition follows the recent removal of two apartment buildings in the Kokkinos settlement in Strovolos, as well as five buildings in the Ayios Eleftherios and Apostolos Andreas settlements in Latsia.
The department also announced plans to sign contracts for two additional tenders involving the demolition of four more buildings, two in the Chrysospiliotissa settlement in Dali, and two in the Ayios Spyridonas settlement in Kato Polemidia, Limassol.
The department further mentioned that it is preparing tender documents for the demolition of an additional seven apartment buildings in the Strovolos III settlement, aiming to complete the demolition of 20 buildings deemed unfit for habitation and requiring immediate evacuation.
Lastly, the statement said that construction on the first new apartment building began in late October in Latsia municipality, with at least two additional apartment reconstruction projects expected to start by the end of 2024 in Latsia and Strovolos.
