A teenage girl died after being involved in a road traffic collision in Larnaca on Wednesday night.
The girl, named as 18-year-old Romanian national Iulia Mihaela Vasile, was riding in the back of a vehicle which had been reported stolen when, according to the Larnaca police’s deputy director Harris Hadjiyiasemi, it mounted a pavement, swerved into a road sign, and hit one tree from the side before coming to a stop when hitting a second tree.
An 18-year-old Jordanian national was also hospitalised as a result of the collision, though he was later discharged and arrested on suspicion of stealing the vehicle and conspiracy to commit a felony.
He appeared in court on Thursday, where he was remanded in custody for eight days.
Vasile was taken to the Larnaca general hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Hadjiyiasemi said the driver of the vehicle and another passenger left the scene on foot after the collision, while the vehicle had been reported as stolen at 1.30pm on Wednesday.
Later on Thursday, the driver, a 16-year-old boy from Palestine, was identified and arrested on suspicion of causing death by negligence and a litany of motoring offences, as well as of having left the scene of the accident.
Larnaca police spokesman Spyros Chrysostomou said police are looking for the 20-year-old man who was a passenger in the car and also fled the scene.
“The driver and one passenger left the vehicle before the police arrived,” he said, adding that the 20-year-old is wanted on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident.
The police’s investigation into the matter is ongoing.
