Paphos police on Monday are investigating the circumstances which led to the injury of a 76-year-old nursing home resident, while the deputy welfare ministry called for immediate information on the case.

The ministry said it was closely following the case, having contacted the man’s relatives from the first instance and remaining in touch with police.

The social welfare services are “awaiting the results of the investigations to decide on the next steps,” the ministry said.

According to police, shortly after 8pm on Saturday, Polis Chrysochous police station received a complaint from a woman who suspected her father, aged 76, had been abused at a nursing home in the area.

The elderly man had been taken to Polis Chrysochous hospital the previous day, where doctors had treated him for a broken nose and other external injuries, assistant Paphos police chief Michalis Nikolaou told the Cyprus News Agency.

The man was discharged and transferred back to the nursing home, however, the next day he fell ill with fever and was re-admitted.

Police investigations yielded independent testimony that the 76-year-old had suffered a fall while trying to leave the nursing home overnight on Friday, around 2am.

The case is under ongoing investigation, Nikolaou said, and an examination by a forensic doctor has been ordered to corroborate the claims.
