The next two weekends are possibly the busiest of December as the lead-up to Christmas causes high anticipation! Now is the time to enjoy all that the island’s creatives and beyond are busy putting together – festive pantomimes, markets, parades, concerts and inspiring performances. Here’s what not to miss this weekend!
First and foremost is a long-awaited event for Cyprus’ English-speaking community, the Anglo Cypriot Theatre’s Christmas pantomime. This year, Ariadne Andreou and Thadd Correia are directing The Little Mermaid, a tale of underwater adventures, fish puns, sinister Octavia and romance. Get ready for three festive and entertaining shows full of song, dance and comedy in the Kingdom of Atlantis featuring Princess Ariel, Prince Finn, Persil the pantomime Dame, Octavia and fish best friends. Satiriko Theatre in Nicosia will welcome panto lovers on Saturday at 2pm and then again at 6pm and on Sunday for a final show at 3.30pm.
Audiences in Limassol will also get to enjoy unique performances this weekend that blend ballet, acrobatics and music. Presenting Christmas classics and Disney favourites are two productions that have shows in Nicosia and Limassol this weekend and what is special about them is that artists will perform on ice!
The Nutcracker Ice Show (in Nicosia on Saturday and in Limassol on Sunday) brings Tchaikovsky’s famous Christmas ballet compositions to life with stunning costumes and set design as dancers skate and wow on the ice.
The Music Circus Show on Ice with Highlights of Frozen 1 & 2 will feature snippets from the popular Disney films performed by dancers, artists, acrobats and ice skaters. The shows are sure to enchant audiences of all ages and get them into the Christmas spirit.
Of course, we couldn’t not mention the festive markets and events that are taking place this weekend, and there are many of them! In Avgorou village, Cyherbia Botanical Park organises its two-day Christmas Festival with games, workshops, activities and a market.
Nicosia will also have several Christmas markets on this weekend. Three to note are the Misfit Sundays Christmas Market, the two-day Handmade in Cyprus Christmas market and the Social Christmas Village by CSI which will fill Eleftheria Square’s lower level this Friday with pop-up shops.
Larnaca too will host Christmas markets this weekend. The Pop Up Bazaar this Sunday on the first floor of Larnaca Agoora will host over 25 vendors from all over the island selling candles, jewellery, bags, vintage clothes and more. As the market is on from 10am to 4pm, activities for children will take place, adding a more wholesome spirit to this weekend’s busy Christmas agenda.
