A 39-year-old caught speeding on the highway at almost 200km/h was arrested for theft when he was found with some €95,000 of cash, police said on Sunday.

Traffic police on the Nicosia-Larnaca highway beckoned the driver to pull over when he was found speeding at 194km/h.

He ignored the calls and drove on, prompting police officers to follow him and cut him off.

Once officers caught up with him they found the 39-year-old had a pending arrest warrants for a break-in and theft case in Nicosia.

He was arrested and then re-arrested after €95,330 in cash was found in his car for which he could not provide sufficient explanations for.

The theft unfolded at a Nicosia factor between December 7 and 10.

He was expected to be remanded at Nicosia district court later on Sunday.
