The police on Monday night called on motorists to drive with care as heavy fog hit parts of the island.

The fog was particularly dense between Nicosia and Larnaca, with visibility seriously reduced on the motorway connecting the capital city and the southeastern coastal town.

The location of the fog also caused problems at the north’s Ercan (Tymbou) airport, with three passenger aircraft being unable to land at the airport while the fog was at its densest.

Two of the aircraft remained in a holding pattern above northern Nicosia for upwards of half an hour, while the third landed at Cukurova airport in Turkey’s Mersin province.
