Cabinet on Wednesday approved a bill regulating the staffing and infrastructure of biomedical laboratories.
Speaking after the cabinet session, Health Minister Michalis Damianos said the bill is “particularly important” as it aims to ensure the quality of the health services.
The bill defines the necessary infrastructure in terms of premises and equipment and staffing for optimal operation and quality assurance of services as well as mandatory accreditation of the methods used.
Damianos said that the health ministry, as the supervisory authority of the health sector, will be able through the mechanism to ensure the implementation of the provisions of the proposed legislation.
In addition to the bill on clinical laboratories, the council of ministers approved a bill regulating the profession of biomedical scientists through the establishment of the clinical laboratory directors registry.
In his closing remarks, Damianos appealed to MPs to proceed with the passage of the bills already tabled by the health ministry, noting that in the near future the ministry will table other very important bills in the House.
