Delineating an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) between Turkey and Syria, which would disregard Cyprus’ sovereign rights, will not be accepted, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has said.

Speaking at a press conference after the conclusion of the EU summit in Brussels, Mitsotakis said stability in Syria after the fall of the Assad regime was to the benefit of all involved parties.

Mitsotakis said he and President Nikos Christodoulides had briefed their counterparts on discussions mentioned in press reports, however he pointed out that they were only based on press information.

He said Greece had an important role to play in Syria’s ‘day after’, especially as the spiritual guardian of the Greek Orthodox people.

Referring to Turkey’s involvement in Syria, Mitsotakis said it was too soon to say.

Everyone, he added, should be interested in securing the territorial integrity of Syria and protecting the country’s religious minorities.
