Patience is running thin at Larnaca’s district administration, which has repeatedly called on the president and community council of Pervolia to remove all illegal construction, including lighting, along Faros beach, which is threatening sea turtles heading to the sea after hatching.
The district administration has warned Pervolia in a letter that measures will be taken and has reported the community leadership to the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research.
In its letter to Fisheries Department director Marina Argyrou, the district administration said an illegal construction on Faros beach – a turtle nesting area – has its lights on and turned towards the sea throughout the night, which is interfering with the sense of direction of hatchlings scuttling to the sea.
It calls on the department to take immediate action to make sure the lights are switched off and attaches a letter sent to the community in 2023, one of many sent since 2022.
The letter to the Fisheries Department was also forwarded to the agriculture ministry, the House environment committee, the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute, Terra Cypriot and Medasset.
In its letter to Pervolia community council, the Larnaca district administration said a construction serving as a restaurant and a platform with gym equipment were in violation of the law.
It added that access for ambulances, cars for people with disabilities and cleaning vehicles was being used by the public to park on the beach.
