Gloria Gallery welcomes 2025 with a new exhibition by Cypriot artist Nikos Papaloukas. Titled My Sea / Mare Meum, the exhibition opens on January 17 and a week later the gallery hosts an artist talk with Papaloukas on his practice and theme.
Since his first solo exhibition in 2005 at Apocalypse Gallery, the sea (mare) has played a central role in Papaloukas’ work and has remained a consistent theme throughout his artistic journey. As the artist himself explains:
“I realised the recurring presence of the sea in my work stems from my childhood memories, which I carry within me as a subconscious dowry. These memories are so powerful that time cannot erase them. I had the great fortune to spend my early childhood years in my homeland, Bella-Pais, a village located on the slopes of Pentadaktylos mountain, with an unobstructed view of the Kyrenia sea.”
In his latest body of work, the human figure retreats from the foreground of his compositions, making way for the horizon and allowing the sea to expand freely, evoking a profound sense of redemption and spiritual liberation.
His artworks will remain on display at the gallery until February 1. The Artist Talk will take place at 11am on January 25.
