The Greek Cypriot Brotherhood in the UK welcomed in the New Year on Sunday with the annual cutting of the vasilopita.

The cutting was blessed by Archbishop Nikitas while 140 members of the brotherhood also attended the event, representatives of the community associations, three MPs and many local councillors from the London boroughs of Barnet and Haringey.

Vice-president of the Greek Cypriot Brotherhood, Christos Karaolis praised the contribution of the Cypriot diaspora to the UK and concluded his remarks by saying “Now we look to 2025 being a year of progress on Cyprus reunification talks, stability, good health and joy.”

In his remarks, Archbishop Nikitas recalled the history of the vasilopita and said that at these festive times, the Cypriot diaspora’s minds turn to their homeland, saying that he hoped that “Turkey’s new year resolution is to allow Cyprus to be free and united”.

Speaking to those present at the event, he urged them to “ensure that our cultures, traditions, faith and language are passed on to the next generation”.

Expressing his gratitude for the work of the brotherhood, High Commissioner Dr Kyriacos Kouros, said “It has long been a pillar of our community here in the United Kingdom. Your commitment to preserving our heritage, fostering unity, and supporting the diaspora is truly commendable.”
