A Greek Cypriot taxi driver appeared in court in northern Nicosia on Tuesday after having crossed to the north at the Ayios Dhometios crossing point with two women in the boot of his taxi.

In court, police officer Nadime Ozturk explained that the taxi had crossed into the north at around 2.20am on January 6 with the two women in the boot, and that the women had attempted to leave the north via Ercan (Tymbou) airport two days later.

She said the pair are both Nepalese nationals, and that both were arrested and remain in custody.

After their arrest, the taxi driver was named as a wanted person. Ozturk said he was then arrested at the Ayios Dhometios crossing point on January 11.

She said he confessed to driving to the north with the two women in his boot and said they had offered him €200 to do so.

She then requested that he be held for a period not exceeding one month, and the court acquiesced.

The taxi driver told the court, “I made a huge mistake, I won’t do it again!
