Cargo ship Guang Rong flying the Cyprus flag ran aground on a beachfront in Tuscany due to bad weather, it was announced on Wednesday.

The 103-metre-long hopper dredger, owned in Italy, had been anchored, but due to rough seas moved towards land and its stern came to rest against the Marina di Massa pier.

The local port authorities sent a helicopter to bring the 12-member crew – mostly Ukrainians – to land.

Investigations have begun to determine any damage to the ship, which has tilted to the left.

No fuel leakages have been reported.

Authorities will decide over the next few days if the ship can be moved to a safe spot.
