Further measures to improve the Pomos fishing shelter were announced by Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou during a visit on Monday.
Panayiotou said that several measures were being planned to upgrade Pomos including deepening the harbour, modifying the entrance and improving mooring points.
The upgrades come after experts and local authorities, including the mayor of Polis Chrysochous, Yiotis Papachristofi, and the deputy mayor of Pomos, Andreas Dionysiou, called for the shelter to be expanded.
“We will proceed with the study of the request submitted by the local authority, always ensuring space for fishermen,” Panayiotou said, emphasising that the ministry had to both cover the needs of the fishermen and satisfy the requests of the local authority.
Pomos mayor Dionysiou said 40 years after construction, the shelter was now facing “serious problems of upgrading, expansion, repairs, deepening and many more”. He expressed his satisfaction with the minister’s promises saying the upgrades were expected soon.
The Pomos fishing shelter is located in the offshore area next to Akron Pomos in the Paphos region. It was established in 1983, offering several mooring points for the safe parking of fishing boats along the pier. Nowadays, it is open to both professional and amateur fishermen.
