A 30-year-old man was remanded in police custody for eight days on Tuesday in connection with a case of arson of a family home in Paphos last week.
Paphos assistant police director Michalis Nikolaou said the suspect gave “nor reason or cause” for setting the fire, to which he admitted, which harmed six members of the same family.
The man was arrested early on Tuesday morning attempting to cross to the north via the Ledra Palace checkpoint in Nicosia.
In the early hours of February 11, the veranda furniture of the family home was set on fire, which spread inside the house of the family of six.
Inside the house was a couple aged 42 and 40, their two children, aged eight and 12, and the 42-year-old’s parents, aged 73 and 72.
The family members were examined at Paphos general hospital.
First- and second-degree burns were identified on the face and hands of the 40-year-old mother, while the younger child was found to have suffered minor burns.
The father and the older child suffered respiratory problems, the latter of which was taken to Makarios children’s hospital.
The 73-year-old grandfather suffered leg and spinal fractures after jumping from the first floor of the residence.
Police said investigations were ongoing.
