Cyprus will go dark for one hour on Saturday, joining millions across the globe in a symbolic act for the planet. From 8.30pm to 9.30pm on Saturday, cities, businesses and government offices will switch off their lights to highlight the urgent need for action against climate change.

Earth Hour, organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), is the world’s largest environmental movement. It encourages individuals and organisations to acknowledge their role in protecting the environment, carrying the message: “It’s time to act.”

The initiative aligns with global efforts to tackle climate change, promote sustainability and rethink humanity’s relationship with nature. In Cyprus, this year’s campaign focuses on food, energy, and water waste, three critical issues affecting the environment and daily life.

The transport ministry confirmed its participation in Earth Hour 2025 while the environmental commissioner, in collaboration with Lakatamia municipality and the Archangelos action initiative, has organised an event featuring tree planting, a treasure hunt and live music. The event will take place at the amphitheatre of Pediaios linear park, near Magli Lake, starting at 6pm.

According to the commissioner’s office, food waste is a major concern this year.

Every piece of wasted food represents lost energy, water, and carbon emissions,” the office stated.

“We live in an era of rising energy demand while striving to reduce emissions and manage our resources efficiently.”

In Nicosia, a public event under the Commissioner’s patronage will take place at the town hall square at 7.30pm. The event will feature environmental groups providing information, children’s activities and artistic performances, including a fire show.

Several municipalities, including Strovolos, Larnaca, and Athienou, have pledged their support. Strovolos municipality continues its “Zero Food Waste” campaign, raising awareness about food conservation. Larnaca municipality will switch off lights at the Kamares monument and Salina park, calling on residents to participate. Athienou municipality will turn off lights at the Kallinikeio municipal hall and promote the campaign online with hashtags #BiggestHourForEarth and #ZeroFoodWaste.

The Cyprus Earth Hour team, in collaboration with the Cyprus sustainable tourism initiative (CSTI), has invited the tourism sector to join the “Switch Off, Make a Difference” campaign. Hotels and tourism businesses across the island are encouraged to go dark from 8.30pm to 9.30pm as part of the global effort to support environmental protection.
