A 38-year-old woman and a 37-year-old man were seriously injured in a traffic accident in Larnaca in the early hours of Tuesday.
According to Larnaca Police spokesperson Spyros Chrysostomou, the crash occurred at around 4.45am when a car driven by the 37-year-old man, with the woman as a passenger, lost control while entering Makarios avenue from the port roundabout.
The vehicle veered into the opposite lane, mounted the pavement, struck a tree, then hit the wall of a nearby building before coming to a stop against a streetlight pole.
Both occupants were trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by fire department personnel. They were taken to Larnaca general hospital, where doctors determined they had suffered serious injuries.
The 38-year-old woman, who sustained a ruptured spleen, was intubated and transferred to the intensive care unit at Nicosia general hospital. According to doctors, her condition is serious but not life-threatening.
The 37-year-old driver remains hospitalised at Larnaca general hospital. His condition is also described as serious but stable.
Larnaca police are investigating the circumstances of the crash.
