The Easter holidays and its traditions are over. Now, it is back to work and time for the island’s cultural calendar to return to its artistic programme. Opening this April in Nicosia is an exhibition by a distinguished artist, recognised and awarded for her work not only in Cyprus but abroad.

Nitsa Hadjigeorgiou counts five decades of being involved in the art world – as an artist, an art teacher in secondary education, an examiner and as the president of EKATE (Cyprus Chamber of Fine Arts). She had made her mark in the creative field and this month, she is ready to take centre stage – or rather her artworks – as she presents her new exhibition at Gloria Gallery titled Memories from the Present. The exhibition will be opened on April 29 by Pavlos Paraskevas, philologist and former Director of Cultural Services.

Across her career, Hadjigeorgiou has conquered both Cyprus’ and the world’s artistic field. She has represented Cyprus abroad in various exhibitions and symposiums, most notably at the India Triennale in 1992, where she was awarded the gold medal for two works titled Ecological Anxiety. In 2022, a major honorary retrospective exhibition of her work was organised by the cultural services of the deputy ministry of culture the Larnaca municipality.

Following that major retrospective exhibition in Larnaca in 2022, Nitsa entered a new phase of creativity. For the past 18 months, she has been painting tirelessly, resulting in a large number of new works, some of which will be presented at her exhibition at Gloria Gallery this month.

What stands out in this collection is the diversity of the works—not only in technique and colour palette, but also in subject matter. The viewer gets the sense that the artist, like a whirlwind, revisited all the creative periods of her past during these 18 months, bringing them into the present and reshaping them with a contemporary perspective.

Many of these works were started years, perhaps even decades ago. Now, however, the moment came when they once again captured her interest and the need to exhibit her Memories from the Present arrived.
