A woman sought in connection with a series of sham marriages was transferred from the UK to Cyprus by the office for combating human trafficking on Wednesday.
According to police, the woman is suspected to be part of an organised criminal network operating in Cyprus between 2019 and 2020 that allegedly orchestrated sham marriages between European women and Asian men.
The charges include human trafficking, forging documents, aiding illegal entry and conspiracy with two more suspects still at large under European and international search warrants, police stated.
The woman will remain in custody until the beginning of her trial before Nicosia court on May 30.
In March, three other individuals had already been found guilty in the same case whose investigation was conducted by the Cyprus police coordinated by Europol and authorities in Germany, the UK and Romania.
