A 19-year-old man from Larnaca was arrested overnight for allegedly assaulting a police officer following a traffic accident. He is set to appear before the district court on Wednesday.
According to Larnaca police spokesman Christodoulos Konsolos, the suspect was arrested shortly before 11pm on Tuesday on a court warrant and is expected to be remanded in custody.
He is under investigation for assaulting and causing actual bodily harm to a police officer, resisting and escaping lawful arrest, issuing threats, and using public insults.
Police are also investigating traffic offences against him, including reckless driving without a driver’s licence, insurance, or a helmet, causing an accident and fleeing the scene.
The incident reportedly began when the motorcyclist was involved in a collision that did not result in injuries. An off-duty police officer who witnessed the accident approached to offer assistance, at which point he was allegedly attacked by the suspect.
The motorcyclist then fled the scene but was later located and arrested. The off-duty officer was taken to Larnaca general hospital for a medical examination.
The case is being investigated by the Larnaca CID and traffic police.
