The importance of regularly checking one’s blood pressure was stressed on Friday by the Cyprus Cardiological Society and the Cyprus Society of Pathology, on the occasion of World Hypertension Day.
In Cyprus, the societies said, the epidemiological data is worrying, as approximately 30 per cent of the adult population is living with high blood pressure, with rates increasing sharply later in life.
A significant percentage, they said, were either undiagnosed or inadequately regulated, which increased the risk of serious complications.
They also called on the public to heed this year’s World Hypertension Day message: “Measure your blood pressure accurately, control it, live longer”.
When identified in time and managed properly, hypertension can be effectively addressed, the societies added.
The two scientific societies are running a campaign with TV spots, awareness actions and a targeted push on social media, to highlight the need to prevent and treat hypertension.
