President Nikos Christodoulides met on Tuesday with members of the UK-Cyprus inter-parliamentary group at the Presidential Palace, highlighting the strengthening relationship between Cyprus and the United Kingdom.
Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said the talks were “constructive and in-depth,” covering EU-UK relations, the Cyprus problem, and shared priorities ahead of Cyprus’ EU council presidency in the first half of 2026.
The meeting comes after three recent discussions between President Christodoulides and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Letymbiotis noted that Christodoulides was the first leader to meet with Starmer after May’s summit, a sign of the “excellent relations” between the two nations.
The president updated British MPs on efforts to resume Cyprus peace negotiations and briefed them on the work of the UN secretary-general’s envoy and the appointment of Johannes Hahn as the EU’s new special envoy for the Cyprus issue.
Discussions also focused on how Turkey-EU relations could play a pivotal role in restarting negotiations. Cyprus is pushing for progress in Ankara-Brussels ties to be linked with movement on the divided island’s talks.
