Government employment in Cyprus recorded a 0.9 per cent increase in May 2025 compared to the same month in 2024, reaching a total of 55,305 employees, according to the Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat).
Specifically, the workforce grew by 479 people overall, while public service employment rose slightly by 0.1 per cent.
Moreover, employment in the education sector increased by 3.3 per cent. In contrast, employment in the security forces declined by 0.8 per cent.
The most significant percentage rise was observed among fixed-term employees, who grew by 7.2 per cent.
In the public service specifically, fixed-term staff numbers rose by 15.8 per cent.
Conversely, the sharpest drop was seen among permanent employees, whose total number fell by 7.1 per cent.
What is more, the report showed that the decline in permanent staff in the education sector reached 20.6 per cent.
For the January to May 2025 period, average total government employment also increased by 0.9 per cent compared with the same period in 2024.
