The case file concerning the suspended mayor of Paphos, Phedonas Phedonos, was returned to the legal service by police headquarters on Friday following the completion of investigative work.
The file relates to a complaint of an alleged rape and will now be studied and evaluated before any further actions are decided.
The file was initially forwarded to the legal service on February 26 and later returned to the police with instructions for additional investigative work.
“Based on the prescribed procedure, an officer of the legal service evaluated the evidence and the information that had been gathered, and subsequently the relevant instructions were received from the police for further investigative work. After the completion of the investigative work, the file was then returned to the legal service,” the office said.
The case involves complaints made by businessman Theodoros Aristodemou, and the alleged victim.
Phedonos has already given a statement to the police as part of the investigations.
In a public post, he described the allegations as an “orchestrated attack” against his character, and a political assassination.
Allegations resurfaced in February when Aristodemou accused Phedonos of committing the crime some ten years ago.
Additional claims of domestic abuse emerged after social media personality Ioanna Photiou, also known as ‘Annie Alexui’, alleged that Phedonos had beaten his wife Louiza Andreou in 2017.
Andreou herself has denied all accusations, writing that “my family is being subjected to a coordinated attack” and affirming that her husband is “a wonderful man, decent and honest.”
Police investigations have included statements from around 20 individuals, including the alleged victim and associates of Phedonos.
Justice minister Costas Fitiris has indicated that arrangements could be made to take statements from individuals currently abroad, including Photiou in Russia, to ensure the investigation proceeds.
