European cinema hits the big screens as the Office of the European Parliament in Cyprus presents select film screenings. Pantheon Cinema in Nicosia and the Larnaca Municipal Theatre are hosting movie nights this March, and with a few evenings already passed, three screenings remain.
Up next is the Spanish film Sorda (Deaf), screened in Nicosia on Thursday, March 19, about Ángela, a deaf woman who is expecting a child with her hearing partner, Héctor.
The arrival of the baby unsettles their relationship, as Ángela begins to feel that she is being forced to raise her child in a world that was not made for her.
On Friday, March 20, Sentimental Value will be screened at Pantheon, presenting a story about two sisters who reunite with their estranged father.
Their father is the charismatic Gustav, a once-renowned film director who offers one of the sisters, Nora, a theatre actress, a role in the film he hopes will mark his return to the artistic scene.
Nora refuses, but later discovers that her father has given the role to a young and ambitious Hollywood star. Suddenly, the two sisters must confront their complicated relationship with their father and coexist with an American star who disrupts the already complex dynamics of their family.
The same film will travel to Larnaca on Monday, March 30, screened in collaboration with the Larnaca Cinema Society. All films will be presented in their original language with Greek subtitles and will welcome viewers on a first-come, first-served basis as admission is free.
Audiences will also have the opportunity to become film critics as they are invited to rate their favourite films on https://luxaward-rating.europarl.europa.eu/el/. They can score the films from 1 star (poor) to 5 stars (excellent) to help decide which film will win the LUX Audience Award.
Plus, they enter a draw to win exciting prizes, such as a trip to the European Parliament in Brussels to attend the LUX Audience Award ceremony on April 14 and meet the creators of the nominated films in person.
