A fire broke out in an abandoned apartment building in Strovolos on Tuesday night, and firefighters brought the blaze under control within minutes, the fire service said on Wednesday.

The fire started in a pile of waste materials inside a second-floor flat and was reported at 10.44pm.

Crews from Acropolis fire station extinguished it by 11.02pm. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

In a separate incident in Limassol later the same night, firefighters tackled another blaze involving waste materials in an open area.

The call was received at 10.56 pm, and a crew from Ayios Ioannis station responded.

On arrival, firefighters found a two-wheeled motor vehicle on fire. The vehicle was extensively damaged, and authorities said the blaze was caused by a malicious act.

The fire service said it handled 26 incidents over 24 hours up until Wednesday morning, including 13 fires, and urged the public not to be concerned about a planned exercise near Larnaca airport on Friday.
